This week is Spring Break for the teens living in Hampton Cove/ Huntsville. You know, we are doing a series right now with our teens on temptation. How appropriate, right? I was the one to speak this past weekend. In giving much thought to temptation and the role it has in our lives, an idiom was brought to mind: “Pretty is as pretty does.”
You know, basically this means that just because you are a good-looking person does not necessarily mean that you are a good person. We are only as good as what we do…or what is in our hearts. If the things you do or say are not “pretty” does that mean your still pretty??
How many times have I known pretty girls on my cheer squad or sorority that were beautiful on the outside, but the things they did polluted their beauty? How many teen girls do I know like that period? How many people in general-guys and girls? I mean I even do it I am sure!
It really irritates me when people are pretty and given attention simply for that fact. Because the fact of the matter is just because you appear to be pretty on the outside does not mean you are pretty on the inside. Truth. But then again, who doesn’t like to be with someone that is cute or handsome, right?
I hate to hate on Mother Theresa, but she was a lady that was all wrinkled and boney…you can’t deny it. However, when you see her in action via video or if you’ve read books of her’s like The Simple Path….you. can. not. deny. her. beauty. Mother Theresa’s beauty is much deeper than her skin. Obviously.
You know, we go about as Christians trying to appear that everything is lovely. Pretty even. We act like we don’t sin. We act like we aren’t even tempted to do something slightly off. However, we all do. We all sin. We all are tempted.
I have not watched Oprah in a while, and I currently don’t have tivo. I did hear that she had Jessica Simpson on her show recently. Go ahead. You can sigh. I still love Jessica Simpson..I think she is a hoot, and I have the same love of fashion that she does. Get over it people. My point is, I youtubed the episode of her on Oprah. It is about a new TV show that Jessica is a part of called “The Price of Beauty.” It comes on tonight at 9pm on VH1, if you want to catch it. She travels all over to find out what women do across the world to be beautiful. I think it should be interesting. I posted part of the interview below. She talked a lot about her own prices she has paid for beauty…
Pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but cuss like a sailor, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but show everyone your cleavage, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but flirt with every person of the opposite sex that’s in the room, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but can’t tell the difference in tuna and chicken, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but talk behind peoples back, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but get sloshed at spring break and act crazy, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but give in to promiscuity at the drop of a hat, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but lie until your blue in the face, pretty is as pretty does. If you want to be pretty but are obsessive about your weight, pretty is as pretty does.
You get the point, I hope.
This goes for guys too.
Pretty is as pretty does.
We are all tempted to do dumb things. We are only as pretty as our hearts in all reality.
If you want to change what you are doing, it has got to start with the heart then move your heart into your actions.
