Upside Down & Backwards

Last week we had our “Christian View of Sex” Conference for our middle school students.

Yes, that is right.

I have done not 1 but 2 of these now in 1 school year…I guess I should be pretty educated on the topic by now, right?

We had many small group times, videos, games, and food (of course).

Side note–I am so very thankful for the few but the treasured small group leaders that were brave enough to approach this topic with teens!  They gave up much time, energy, and shared their hearts!  They were such a blessing to our ministry.

Once again, I am amazed.

Every time we do a series or conference on this topic, I am blown away.

We are an upside down and backwards people.

So many times, what is taught to teens via tv, movies, magazines, and peers about sex is upside down and backwards.  We have skilled writers plotting against young minds, molding them in ways we should be horrified.  Have you heard the song “If U Seek Amy?”  Say the words real slow and see what it means…it is truly disturbing. Originally, the song was banned because of the original words.  They did not think they could put it on the radio and MTV, because parents would clearly not support a song with the “F” word in it.  Therefore, the brilliant writers found a way to spell it out with out people knowing.  Now, they can sell their albums. Congratulations.

As I talked with Robin, our guest speaker, about where all the oral sex stuff originated at being more common…Sadly, that was brought right into the homes of American’s by our former President Clinton.  He brought it to the table.  “Is oral sex really sex?”

He is not the only one to blame.

Have you seen or heard of all of the governors, senators, and even pro golfer’s that crusade their infidelity?  What kind of examples are these?  These people that can’t keep a vow in a marriage are expected to keep their vows of office and rules of the game?

Upside Down and Backwards.

The thing is,…I can sit here on my throne and condemn and judge those “leaders.” However, those people were put on those pedestals by the people.   The “normal” people in the world put them there.

In reference to that, that leads me to believe that the “normal” people do not have good judgement of character.  That they are also upside down and backwards.

We live in a world where Brittany Spears sings about sex and 3somes.  We live in a world where people cheat on their wives and husbands.  We live in a world where Oprah has multiple specials just on sexual predators.  We live in a world where teen girls “sext” pictures of themselves via phone to boys in order to get some attention from anyone who will look.  We live in a world where human sex trafficking has never been higher in numbers than it is today.  We live in a world where a great show about the “Price of Beauty” by Jessica Simpson is followed by a show featuring transgender “women” that give makeovers…upside down and backwards.

If you wonder why we have “Christian View of Sex” Conferences…all of the above reasons.

A Christian View of Sex is something our teens are in crucial need of with all the opposite messages.  We do not want them to be upside down and backwards.  We want them to walk in light of God’s truth and grace.

I was reading through the surveys we gave the students at the end of the conference today.  Many of the students said that they thought the weekend would be awkward, but instead it was fun.  Many students mentioned that they feel more comfortable to approach their parents about the topic.  Many of the students said that they trusted and felt completly accepted by their small group leaders.  Many of the students said that their Christian view of sex involved marriage and glorifying God.  Ahhh…they got it…

One of our small group leaders compared this past weekend to sending them out on the battle field.  He said he hoped he gave them the information they needed, but that he won’t be there for every step on the battlefield.

Hopefully, they will choose to not be upside down and backwards.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”  -1 John 2:15-17
