“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10
This week, as I have been working, I have been listening to my different podcasts from Gateway Pink and Messenger International. Twice this scripture has come up as the main part of the lessons. Therefore,…I have some thoughts on it. Here’s a few observations I have made about this piece of scripture.
First, the tithe can be any number of things… time, talents, gifts, treasured God moments, money, etc. This year I have felt like I have been storing up spiritually… I have been so thirsty for God and the word this year…and as always, if you thirst, you will thirst no more when you seek Him. I have delved into scripture, prayer, and had an open heart for Him to reveal Himself to me in new ways. Those treasures, I have stored in my heart and been trying to put my heart into action. Just like a bear eating for hibernation,…when we store up, we grow bigger and in turn stronger, and we can go a while with out a big meal.
I have shared with a few people this, but I will share it with you also. About a month ago, I tried to start the Beth Moore study Jesus the One and Only. From the looks of it, it looks great. The first two weeks, I was trying to do the study, and I just felt like I didn’t need to do it yet. It is almost as if my spiritual pantry was full…no more room. So, I am putting it on my shelf until Advent season. The more I have thought about it, it makes total sense. In this season of ministry, my time is limited, my sleep is limited, and I need my time and my sleep. I know, I also need the Lord. However, in this season instead of diving into the books of the Bible and grappling with new truths, I need reminders of what He has already taught me–simple truths to stand upon for the marathon of summer. Therefore, I am going to reopen My Utmost for His Hightest by good old Oswald and try the new Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. If anyone wants to join me on this, please let me know! I have already had a couple women commit to doing these also.
Another thing I noticed about that scripture, is the strong language. It says “Test me in this…” Wow, that is a strong statement from the Lord… We aren’t told to test God on things very often. In fact, when He does say to test Him, that means it is certainly true. After all, it’s the time to pour out and pour out big! It’s that time again to take out of the storehouse, or spiritual pantry, what we have put in so we can pour out our time, talents, energy, spiritual nuggets, wisdom and yes, even sometimes sleep.
My prayer is that the floodgates of blessing would pour out on me, our team, our families, and our students as we embark on a fast paced summer! That each bus ride, plane ride, meal, devotional, mission team, worship service and hang time would be filled with blessing, laughter, safety, revelation, bonding, the recognition of God’s presence, and that we may all be filled in a different way so that we can’t contain showing what the Lord has done.
We take it in to pour it out. It’s time to empty that storehouse.
